Apprentice - Play Magic Online

Apprentice from Dragonstar Studios* is an excellent program that allows you to play Magic with your friends online. (*Dragonstar Studios site is down - possibly permanently - the links below point to a mirror site at E-League).

Here you can find details on how to get and install Apprentice.

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING INSTALLING OR USING APPRENTICE AFTER READING THIS GUIDE, DROP INTO THE APPRENTICE QUESTIONS FORUM IN THE LIBRARY

Since it includes all of the cards from all of the sets, right back to Alpha, you can play with cards that will not be seeing print again (NOW you can play a deck with 4 Black Lotus without being a millionaire...), and test decks to see how well they work before you pay out your hard-earned cash for the cards.

To use Apprentice both players will need:

An Instant Messenger
Any instant messenger will do - it's just for finding an opponent and chatting while setting up the game - not, as previously thought, to supply a connection for the game to run over :)

The Apprentice core program:
Win 95/98/ME (1486K)
or
Win NT/2000/XP (1152K)

  WinZip (1762K)
(To unzip the WIn NT/2000 version, and the database updates)

  The most recent database update
(All sets INCLUDING ONSLAUGHT- 461K)
Make sure you both have the most recent database update. If one of you has an older version, that player will not be able to use some of the more recent cards, and will not be able to read the text on any of the more recent cards that their opponent may be using. This can be very frustrating if you are not familiar with the card in question...

INSTALLATION

NOTES ABOUT DOWNLOADING:
Always make sure that your anti-virus software is up-to-date, and that you scan any files you have downloaded for viruses before opening them. We cannot be held responsible for any problems with your computer if you ignore this simple piece of advice.

1
. INSTALLING WINZIP

(If you already have WinZip, you can skip directly to Section 2) Follow the instructions at the download site for downloading WinZip.

Once the download is finished, run the file winzip81.exe. The WinZip 8.1 Setup program will run. Follow the instructions you're given. PLEASE READ THE LICENCE AGREEMENT - WinZip is provided on a for-trial basis only. If you intend to keep using it after the trial period expires, you will need to register your copy.

2. INSTALLING APPRENTICE.

If you are using Windows 95 or Windows 98:

Once the download has finished, run the file appr146.exe that you have just downloaded. The Install Apprentice program will run. Follow the instructions you're given, and MAKE A NOTE OF THE DIRECTORY YOU INSTALLED APPRENTICE TO - You will need to know this to update the database later.

If you are using Windows NT or Windows 2000:

Once the download has finished, Create a new directory on your Hard Drive (e.g. C:\Apprentice). MAKE A NOTE OF THE DIRECTORY YOU INSTALLED APPRENTICE TO - You will need to know this to update the database later.

Run WinZip and open the file appr146.zip that you have just downloaded.

Press the "Extract" icon in WinZip, and use the "Folders/Drives" box to go to the directory you created earlier (e.g. C:/Apprentice). Press the "Extract" button, and WinZip will automatically create the Apprentice files for you.

3. UPDATING THE APPRENTICE DATABASE.

The database that comes with Apprentice is out of date (the last card set it has is Urza's Destiny!). In order to use the newest card sets you need the updated database.

Once the download has finished, run WinZip and open the file approracle.zip that you have just downloaded.

Press the "Extract" icon in WinZip, and use the "Folders/Drives" box to go to the directory you installed Apprentice in earlier (e.g. C:/Apprentice). Press the "Extract" button.

You will be asked if you want to over-write some files in the Apprentice directory. Press the "Yes to All" button.

WinZip will automatically update the Apprentice database for you.

YOU HAVE NOW SUCCESSFULLY INSTALLED AND UPDATED APPRENTICE!

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING INSTALLING OR USING APPRENTICE AFTER READING THIS GUIDE, DROP INTO THE APPRENTICE QUESTIONS FORUM IN THE LIBRARY
