Wednesday, September 19, 2001 10:45 PM - To funny not to post.. - Shanky

How stupid are some people? Well lets find out.

Actual dialog of a fired WordPerfect Customer Support employee:

"Ridge Hall computer assistant; may I help you?"

"Yes, well, I'm having trouble with WordPerfect."

"What sort of trouble?"

"Well, I was just typing along, and all of a sudden the words went away.",

"Went away?"

"They disappeared."

"Hmm. So what does your screen look like now?"

"Nothing."

"Nothing?"

"It's blank; it won't accept anything when I type."

"Are you still in WordPerfect, or did you get out?"

"How do I tell?"

"Can you see the C: prompt on the screen?"

"What's a sea-prompt?"

"Never mind. Can you move the cursor around on the screen?"

"There isn't any cursor: I told you, it won't accept anything I type."

"Does your monitor have a power indicator?"

"What's a monitor?"

"It's the thing with the screen on it that looks like a TV. Does it have a little light that tells you when it's on?"

"I don't know."

"Well, then look on the back of the monitor and find where the power cord goes into it. Can you see that?"

......"Yes, I think so."

"Great! Follow the cord to the plug, and tell me if it's plugged into the wall."

......"Yes, it is."

"When you were behind the monitor, did you notice that there were two cables plugged into the back of it, not just one?"

"No."

"Well, there are. I need you to look back there again and find the other cable."

......"Okay, here it is."

"Follow it for me, and tell me if it's plugged securely into the back of your computer."

"I can't reach."

"Uh huh. Well, can you see if it is?"

"No."

"Even if you maybe put your knee on something and lean way over?"

"Oh, it's not because I don't have the right angle-it's because it's dark."

"Dark?"

"Yes-the office light is off, and the only light I have is coming in from the window."

"Well, turn on the office light then."

"I can't."

"No? Why not?"

"Because there's a power outage."

"A power... A power outage? Aha! Okay, we've got it licked now. Do you still have the boxes and manuals and packing stuff your computer came in?"

"Well, yes, I keep them in the closet."

"Good! Go get them, and unplug your system and pack it up just like it was when you got it. Then take it back to the store you bought it from."

"Really? Is it that bad?"

"Yes, I'm afraid it is."

"Well, all right then, I suppose. What do I tell them?"

"Tell them you're too stupid to own a computer."

Tuesday, September 18, 2001 12:26 PM - What is going to happen? - Shanky
David Letterman had a very emotional show on last night. I missed the opening monologue, but I hear it was one of his greatest ever. The interview with Dan Rather was the most emotional. Dan Rather broke out twice. It was said that Letterman broke out in tears during a break for commerials.
From CNNSitting behind his desk, Letterman asked for the audience's "indulgence" as he struggled for words. "If we're going to continue to do shows, I need to hear myself talk for a few minutes," he said. "We've lost 5,000 New Yorkers .... and it's terribly sad."

Forever changed...Very good image of NYC with the towers standing strong.

Tuesday, September 11, 2001 10:57 AM - WTF? - Shanky
What the HELL is going on?!?!!? Check out any news site.. Or turn on your TV...

This all started according to the TV, about 9am. They broke into our NBC station, the local news people did. To say that there was a plane crash just about 2 hours drive from State College.. Shanksville, Pa. (hmmm hope there are not after me, the shanky part.. yea. I know. stupid connection) Shanksville is on the PA turnpike between Harrisburg and Pittsburgh. (more exact, between Bedford and Summerset)

I cant get cnn.com to work. or msnbc.com. So turn on the TV

From news.com: "Moments after airplanes separately crashed into both towers of the World Trade Center, and then later the Pentagon, Web sites for the major news outlets were swamped by an overflow of traffic."

I also heard on TV another plane crashs near pittsburgh? (think that might be the shanksville crash)

news.com: "A witness said he saw bodies falling from the 110-story towers and people jumping out."

Monday, September 10, 2001 10:43 AM - What else to do? (now complete) - Shanky

I am between classes right now. Nothing better to do than post something.

Well this weekend, since I didnt really post anything about me. Shanna came over Friday night. She stayed until I guess around 7pm Sunday night. Well I got out of work early from UPS on Friday. Came home, noone was there. Think Dan and Shanna went for a walk while they were waiting for me to get home. Terry was at work. The whole house was dark. I figured Dan was going to jump on my when I walked by his hiding spot. But there wasnt anyone home. Then Shanna and Dan came back. Wondering why I didnt park in the parking lot I normally try to park in. Well for the whole week, after I get off UPS, I try to part in that small, but closer, lot. And it is always full. Well Friday, I figured, why should I go look for a spot there, it will be full. So I just parked in the bigger one, which always has lots of spaces. Well when I walked by the small one. It had like ten empty spots. Great.. The one time I dont try to park there, there are empty spots. Ohh well I didnt feel like walking back just to move my car. If I did, ten people would show up really quick and take all those spots before I can get my car there. What did I do Friday.hmm.. We made dinner. Hamburgers, French Fries, PopCorn Chicken, and Maccornni and Cheese. We watched TV some, a few Family Guy shows on my computer, and I think a movie. Terry got home. We talked, then went to sleep. Which was around I guess 2:30 to 3:30 am. Cant remember which one, maybe it was earlier. (edit: we watched Meet the Parents again, Shanna fell asleep half way though, both Dan and I watched the whole thing)

Well we all slept in Saturday morning. We really didnt all get up until 11am to noon. Got our showers, and waited for Dan's parents to show up. Which they did. Dan and them left, ended up going shopping for dress cloths for Dan. While Terry, Shanna, and I went to the other side of town to look for this baseball stadium Terry saw. I didnt believe him. We were driving for a while, I didnt think it was going to be anywhere near worth the drive out there. I even made a joke, hey look that sign says ten miles to Harrisburg (which is like an hour drive from State College). But we were only I guess about five miles outside of State College (and a good hour from Harrisburg still, eheh). But we did get to the place. The gate was closed. So we parked next to it. And walked in anyway (there is a big opening, just not big enough to drive between). So we walked up to the left field, there was two fields, one on the left, other on the right. The left one looked nicer. But hell, the right one would still be five times better than any field I have ever played on before. We were not sure what these fields are used for. But they had a bunch of advertisments on the walls, a big scoreboard, a big clock, some blechers, two nice dugouts, a bullpen, giant backstop with plenty of room for the catcher to get a popped up foul ball, and some really nice, well taken care of grass and infield dirt. The bases were still there. But we had to clean the dirt off home plate. :) If I remember correctly, the center field wall was 400 feet away. It was a nice full sized park. Too nice of a park. I was waiting for the SWAT to show up and escort us out. But noone showed up. So Terry, Shanna, and I just starting our normal batting practice stuff. Where one of us pitchs, one hits, and the other gets the hit balls. Although, most of the balls end up behind homeplate, because of bad pitchs, good pitchs, or just the balls being poped up foul back there. We went a few rounds of each of us hitting. Shanna actually hit the most pitchs out of any of us. I guess that was because I was pitching. :) Terry would swing to hard and miss my pitchs, and Terry's pitchs to me would be wild, but I would still swing after them, and foul them off. We did a few throwing practices. But my arm was really tired by then. Plus my glove hand started to hurt after Terry would keep on throwing the balls as hard as he could. I caught them all, not to my left hand's welcoming. The grass of the field was really nice, thick, deep green baseball turf. The stuff you see in professional ballparks. Better than most minor league teams. But we still couldnt figure out who actually plays there. After we all got tired, Shanna and I started to talk. Terry said he isnt going to sit in the sun, so he went to his car and turned on the A/C. Shanna and I talked for a while about work/school/life/etc. Carlisle is started to get better for her, which I think is a great thing. Well we figured we let Terry wait long enough, so we start to walk back, and we see this truck driving around. It looked like a field crew. They didnt bother us. Since we were just 'walking'. Terry took all the baseball stuff back with him. So they figured we just went for a walk and didnt play/mess up their field.

We went back to the apartment, just hung around for a while. Shanna and I were watching Dogma. Dan and his parents got home. They didnt leave for a while. So Shanna's plans on cooking for us Saturday night didnt work out. But we were still all hungry, so we ended up going to Ruby Tuesdays. (to make it fast, Dan got the salad bar, both Terry and Shanna got chicken tenders along with the salad bar, and I got a chicken sandwich, was going to get dessert, but didnt because I didnt want everyone waiting of me to get finished). Good. Food in tummies. Done with that. We got back to the apartment. Think Terry had to work.. yea. it was until 4am, but not sure when he left. Dan and Shanna talked for a while, while I was watching some movies, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was one of them, along with more Family Guy episodes. But before that, Terry and I headed to Giant. He wanted to get some more healthy microwave dinners for himself and some skim milk (which only he likes, but we forgot to get). I got what I really wanted, my half gallon of Strawberry ice cream. Which is kinda the replacement for the dessert I didnt get. Probally better I got the half gallon, it was only $2.00, where the dessert at Ruby Tuesday's was $4.99. (*as of right now, a little more than half of it is gone*)

Well after I was done watching my movies, Shanna decided she needed to bother me some more. Dan came back to my room too. She wanted to watch a movie, she picked Cruel Intentions. But with us fooling around, it was said that we should pick a movie we shouldnt have to pay attention to understand. So we started up The Big Lebowski (spelling is way off I bet). Shanna ended up falling asleep as soon as the movie started. Dan was probally half asleep, but he saw the movie before. I was awake and watching it. Dan ended up getting up and going back to his room and in the bathroom and I guess getting ready for bed. I really didnt care. I figured he must be tired and he saw the movie before, so there was no need for him to watch it again. But Shanna was still asleep while laying on top of my legs, which by this time were long asleep and lacked all feeling. She woke up, and laided correctly on the bed and started to go back to sleep. Put the covers back over her, since she was cold the whole night. And I continued to watch the movie. Unless I got tired. So I went to the bathroom, cleaned up, put on my Pj's, paused the movie (which had an hour left), turned the lights off, and went to bed. Shanna had the good side of the bed (the softer part). So I got to sleep on the left side, which is the harder side. I sleep on both normally. Mostly the right, softer, because I never close my door, and Dan likes to have all the lights on, so the lights are visiable on the left side of the bed, but not the right.

I dont know what time she got up. But she was up before I was. I woke up near 11:30am. Saw she was watching TV. So we watched whatever she had on, talked a while, think it was about the issues the show was talking about. I was half asleep so I really dont know what I was talking about. Dont know what really happened when. Think Dan got up next. About an hour after I did. Terry got up also. He left to go do his laundry. Shanna had to head out to Giant to get some stuff for dinner. Dan went along with them. I didnt have a shower, so I wasnt going. But either did Dan. Ohh well. Hope the people at Giant didnt passout from the smell. Shanna and Dan got back before Terry. So we started to make dinner while Dan took a shower. By that time, I was watching tennis since football started to bore me. Terry got back. Then about 15 minutes later we started to eat. Dinner was very good. Shanna did a great job. We cleaned up. And she had to head home. But she did forget two things, her saddles and her hair brush. Watched some more football. Talked with my dad on the phone. Talked with Shanna on the phone. And watched the rest of the football game. Then went to bed. Great weekend. Need more like these.

Wednesday, September 05, 2001 05:21 PM - About Computers... - Mine GO BOOM

Well, I popped in my friend's calc class, they were teaching about derivitives the hard way (ie: how they work). Funny, because every problem they went through, I got the answer in about 10 secs max, without a calculator or nothing, and my friend (Robert 'DuMass') was working all this crap out with limits and junk, and couldn't understand what the use was or anything (nothing against him, he hasn't done calc before or anything).

Oh well, about those touch-screen computers, was there a keyboard? Was their a 'main' computer, or was it just a monitor that has lots of cables going to a hub/wall? If there is a keyboard and a main computer, I know ways to do stuff with it. Just a keyboard, maybe, matters about their setup for how the network server secures on those computer's connection. If neither, bah, good luck, would have to do java's and downloadable temp software off the net to screw around with it. I would icq this crap to you, but you didn't join icq's chat thingy (i assume your are at work), so leaving message here, since in college. I have 10 minutes till class starts and I need to read a 3 page essay (got first page done). ;)

Tuesday, September 04, 2001 12:53 PM - Another way to get to the net - Shanky

I have been to the Lounge in the Waring Commons building a few times. They have four computer here set up to the net. But only two work. Well I am lucky enough to get on one. BTW, this is right next to the computer lab, which is currently filled and has people waiting. Well I come here to the lounge to eat my lunch, and read the newspaper. Before my next class. Well I have found out there are no mice on these computers. They are windows based systems, but have 15inch lcd touch screen displays. Ryan, your mini computer running Win2k. Well with alot faster processor. Cant find out what, becuase when I push the Start button, all I get is: ShutDown, Documents, and Programs. And in that Programs there is just the Startup folder, with IE there. Which is what started right up when I logged on to this computer. When I miniumize IE, there is nothing on the desktop. Nothing. But at least they do have a wallpaper. Some freaky thing.

Well today is going good. Got up.. Didnt really want to. But who does. Classes are fine so far. Dont expect the next one to be any different. Only big thing today is, well I start at UPS tonight. I searched the apartment looking for my work boots. Dont see them anywhere. But when I looked for them in Waynesboro, nothing. Hope my mom didnt throw them out. But she said she never touched them. So I have no idea where they are. I am just going to ware my normal shoes to orientation. If they say anything. I will just drive to the mall (which is less than a mile away) and buy some. I have no idea when I will be getting home. But when I am done with classes today. I got to get back fast, eat quickly, and drive right out to UPS. He wants me to be there as soon as I can.

But these computers are pretty cool. But you can only have one window open at a time. So they are kinda limited to just surfing.

I might post stuff about what I did over the weekend. Was kinda busy. But with me started work and classes back up, I am kinda busy too.

Monday, September 03, 2001 02:31 PM - Back in State College - Shanky

I am back in State College.
